On March 20–22, the Annual Session of China Development Forum (CDF) 2021 was hosted online and onsite at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. The theme of this year's forum was China on a New Journey of Modernization.
Under the initiative of Lu Xin, President of the Chinese Society for Technical and Vocational Education and former Vice Minister of the Ministry of Education, the forum set up the topic of vocational education for the first time. Issues around the topic of Opening a New Chapter for Vocational Education on how to integrate vocational education with national development and how to play vocational education's supporting role were discussed by President Lu Xin, Huang Wei, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Foreign Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Wang Fuming, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Vice President of the Chinese Society for Vocational and Technical Education; Wei Qing, Chief Technology Officer of Microsoft China; Zhao Anji, Chairperson and CEO of Foremost Group and Simon Bartlett, former President of the WorldSkills International. Wang Danzhong, Secretary of CPC Committee of Nanjing Vocational College of Information Technology, was invited.
Lu Xin elaborated on what and how vocational education can adapt in his speech titled Enhancing the Ability of Vocational Education to Adapt to High-quality Development. She believed that the development of vocational education is a global issue that concerns not only the economy but also global development. This year, for the first time, the China Development Forum set the topic of vocational education, which provides a historic opportunity for Chinese vocational education to stand on the world platform. It is also a pioneering historical moment for China's vocational education.
Lu Xin emphasized that vocational education occupies a large proportion of China's overall education system. At present, it accounts for 45%–50%, and it will reach 70% in the future. Adjusting and optimizing the structure of education, especially in the context of the popularization of higher education, is an important task for the 14th Five-Year Plan period. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the Chinese government will strive to make efforts to promote education in this proportion. The development of vocational education should focus on six areas: first, helping science and technology to become self-reliant and self-improving; second, supporting the construction of a modern industrial system; third, building a new development pattern; fourth, driving the construction process of Digital China; fifth, advancing rural revitalization; and sixth, promoting green transformation and development.
It is reported that the China Development Forum was sponsored by the Development Research Center of the State Council of China and organized by China Development Research Foundation and it has been held once a year since 2000 and has been held for 21 consecutive sessions. It is an important platform for the dialogue among senior leaders of the Chinese government, global business leaders, international organizations and Chinese and foreign scholars.
